Friends of Brown's Vineyard and Winery
Eighteen Southern York County wine enthusiasts/investors announce the formation of a new winery. This group of friends, which includes Stanley and David Brown of Brown’s Orchards and Farm Market in Loganville, will operate under the trade name Friends of Brown’s Vineyard and Winery. The group is confident that the dynamic nature of its members (with careers in building, sales, insurance, finance, farming and computer technology), combined with a common interest in the wine business, will assure a successful venture.
Brown’s has often considered planting grapes for wine-making, particularly now with recent findings that drinking wine in moderation has certain health benefits. David Brown comments, “We feel it’s a natural fit for our business. This region has some of the best wine producing soil in the country, and the climate is very suitable.”
In April 2008, seven acres of grapes were planted on Brown’s farm just a half mile from the market. Plans are also in place to lease a currently operating mature vineyard. The winery expects to begin by selling fruit wines at Brown’s Farm Market in the fall of 2008. White varietals will be available for sale in 2009. Red varietals will become available during the fall of 2010.
The vineyard group will be constructing a building for their winery operation in 2009, just a few miles west of the market on Yellow Church Road, where there will be a tasting room and a beautiful view of the Yellow Church Farm. Besides wine sales, the winery location will also provide a scenic setting for meetings and receptions.
