Shirley Lentz

Phyllis Markle

If you are a regular Brown’s South shopper, you surely know Shirley Lentz!  She’s always ready at the register to offer a warm smile and a sincere thank you for shopping our store.

As a child, Shirley lived in Jacobus, then in Sticks…then her family moved to Loganville right around the time Brown’s came to town.  She has fond memories of the old fruit stand (and claims that her ultimate goal was to someday work at Brown’s!)

Shirley graduated from Dallastown High School in 1956.  She and her husband, Lee, were set up on a blind date after he returned from serving during the Korean War.  It was true love on the first date and marriage soon followed!  They have two sons, now ages 47 and 50.

In 1970, Lee opened Lee’s Drive-in on the Trail (no relation to the current Lee’s on Route 30) because he decided the area needed a restaurant. Shirley spent many hours there as chief cook and came up with her own recipes.  She never made cole slaw in her life before that, but she experimented and it was a hit!  Lee’s was also famous for Shirley’s made-from-scratch chicken pot pie.  After nearly 20 years in business, Lee and Shirley sold the restaurant in 1989.

Shirley applied at Brown’s at this point, but there were no positions available, so she went to work at Saubel’s Market in Shrewsbury where she ran registers and was office manager.  Finally, in August 2006, the time was right for Shirley to join the Brown’s staff.  She says she loves working with the Brown’s family and enjoys the contact with our wonderful customers. She feels her most important task is to raise people’s spirits.

The Lentz’s enjoy weekend escapes to their mountain home in Juniata County where Shirley spends a lot of time mowing on her John Deere tractor and cutting wood with her very own chainsaw.  But in the wintertime, skiing takes priority.  In between her work and activities, Shirley tries to find time to paint for relaxation.

Ever kind, always pleasant and excellent at representing Brown’s mission, we are so blessed to have Shirley as part of our family.  If you have had the pleasure of meeting her, we’re sure you think so too!
