Dear Friends,
Sixty years ago this January, Dad moved his family, including my mother, two brothers and me, to this small orchard. The previous summer, as a young 13-year-old, I rode the bus from York and helped pick and haul peaches from the orchards to the small fruit stand. We knew nothing about fruit growing, but with a “crash course,” we learned the basics quickly. During the school year, my weeknights and Saturdays were spent pruning trees. Summer jobs were varied including thinning “fuzzy” peaches, picking peaches and other fruits, grading for the fruit stand, along with all the necessary work maintaining the orchards. I loved the industry - and the rest, as they say, is history!
2007 was indeed a special 60th year, as our orchards produced the largest crop of superior quality apples we’ve ever harvested. Supplies in cold storage should last into June.
To celebrate the start of our 61st business year, and to thank our thousands of loyal customers, we will be offering special prices on apples through the month of February. Pass the word along, and enjoy the King of Fruits! Remember, always keep your apples refrigerated. Never keep on the kitchen table for more than a day. Ideal temperature should be 32 to 34 degrees with high humidity.
Although activity around the market has slowed for the season, we realize that in a very short time, it will be growing and harvesting time and our parking lot will once again be utilized to its fullest. As Brown’s continues to move ahead, we are exploring various changes within departments to improve your shopping experience. Expanded parking is on the list. Another is the checkout system. David is working full steam ahead to have the system up and running soon. There will be many advantages including greater inventory control, instant credit card response, and the capability of offering gift cards rather than gift certificates.
Here’s hoping for a winter that’s not too harsh so that we will see you often!
Your friend,
Stan
