Stan's Notepad - September 2007

StanDear Friends,

Just a month ago, the peach orchards were all carrying colorful, ripening fruits. Now, as I drive through the orchards, 80% of the peach trees give that empty feeling. The warm, relatively dry summer has produced outstanding flavor. For all peach lovers, we anticipate having peaches until mid-September. In addition, we will have our OWN canned freestone peaches available in heavy, light or sugar-free syrup.

On the other hand, the apples continue to grow, with limbs laboring from the increasing weight of the fruits. We are so thankful for the recent, soaking rain. Growers throughout the region have been patiently waiting and Mother Nature has delivered. There is potential for a very large apple crop. Gala apples are getting their creamy color with pink cheeks, and should be on the shelves when you read this letter. For those looking forward to juicy Bartlett pears, they are almost ready.

We are also watching with mixed emotions as our student seasonal staff returns to school. Whether it be to attend local high schools and colleges, or to travel to a distant college, each has a different and exciting field of interest.

One of the countless joys of our business is to see these young students come to Brown’s, many for their first job. Since we are a very labor intensive industry, the students learn quickly the importance of good work ethics…or to put it simply, a good day’s work for a good day’s pay. With constructive guidance, they become key members of our extended Brown’s family. We are in the midst of our busiest time of the year, and replacing their positions is always a challenge. (This year, we had 14 graduates!) They will be missed, but we wish them all the best.

Back-to-school. Apples and pears. Soon, pumpkins and fresh cider will be here too. Fall is not far away! How did I begin this letter? “Time marches on.” How true! Take some time and enjoy the goodness of this land.

Your friend,

Stan
